Not So Much A Trainwreck

I work at a cinema (not that you’re particularly interested) and so with my job I get two free cinema tickets every week. This means I go to see new releases quite frequently, as well as hear a lot of professional opinions on certain films. I believe you should form your own personal opinion on a film and ignore what everyone else thinks- but I’m still going to recommend a film to you because I like to contradict myself.

Trainwreck is said to be one of the funniest romantic comedies of the year by pretty much all of the leading movie reviewers. And I would agree.

The story is a little bit stereotypical in a way- a career driven women who doesn’t think she’s capable of love and so has a lot of sex with a lot of different guys. Until prince charming comes and sweeps her off her feet. But there always has to be a dilemma, or what kind of rom-com would it realistically be? But love conquers all in the end (I promise. It always does).

The thing is there’s something not so stereotypical about it. Think about all the past rom-coms and the leading actors in them. They are all skinny, attractive, hot, sexy (need I go on) humans- the story makes you optimistic about finding love, but the people; not so much. The thing about Trainwreck is that the leads are not so stereotypical. Amy Schumer and Bill Hader are perhaps not your stereotypical beautiful leads, even though there is something strangely attractive about Bill Hader and I personally think Amy Schumer has the best body. It may not seem like an important thing to have two not so perfect leads but it really is. I find it makes the movie so much more relatable- I’m not joking but the story is pretty fucking relatable. You will find yourself finding at least 3 similarities between yourself and the leads and if you don’t go out and live a little.

Not only are the leads perfect looking, they are perfectly funny. Seriously Bill Hader is literally the funniest person in a film right now (probably don’t hold me to). We know him from the genius creations of Superbad and the likes, plus Amy Schumer is bloody hilarious as a drunk career women. Their humour together, which is a mixture of sexual and cultural references, and their on-screen chemistry just makes this movie perfect. Seriously if you don’t want to see it for the story line see it for Bill and Amy. Plus it was directed by Judd Apatow so it’s bound to hilarious.

This movie is just incredibly happy. It has the perfect mixture of happiness, sadness, funniness, rudeness, and awkwardness- seriously great combinations. It will have you crying with happiness as well as crying with tears of laughter and adoration for the story and the two leading actors.

I am not really one to be impressed by new movies. I really think a lot of films are now repeating old ones- all the story lines are the same, everything’s predictable, the leads have no connection, there’s nothing that’s really outstanding or new. But this film is seriously one of the best I have seen. I highly recommend seeing it.

If you like rom-coms, and generally happy and amazing films, that will make you feel amazing and make you question your life, see it.

Trainwreck = 4/5
