Here is another one of my University open day posts for you. This one is for City University in London, so I hope you enjoy it and find it interesting as well as helpful.
So again I will split the information between the 4 categories of travel, place, accommodation, and what the actual uni is like. Here it goes…
Travel: Similarly to when I went to Essex University last week I took the train to London but the journey was even simpler! It was a straight line from my hometown to London and from there it was only a tube ride away. It couldn’t have been any simpler. Again the train wasn’t that costly (especially with a railcard) and the only extra expense was for my tube ticket (only an extra £12) which allowed me to travel by tube all day to all the districts throughout London. Not too bad considering the ride was a mere hour journey, and the tube takes all of about 3 minutes to go from one place to the next.
Once at the Unis general location of Angel in Islington it was only a short 10 minute walk to the uni, and as an extra bonus it was a straight road walk! The travel to London, and to the actual uni, could not have been any less painless that it was. The only thing I would say is be weary of Londoners because those bitches are ruthless.
Place: I was incredibly impressed with where the uni was. There is always that stigma that when you are in London it is dangerous and you will be mugged or murdered- no! Absolutely not the case it is just a very wrong stereotype given to London. The area that City is located in is a place called Angel, which is only a 10 minute bus ride away from the centre of Islington- great for a night out and to visit the main shops. You don’t have to travel to Islington though because there is a whole host of adorable cafes, shops, and bakery’s scattered all down the street on the way to the Uni- I suggest going into Pret A Manger and then going across the street to The Hummingbird bakery for the best red velvet you will ever have.
The general area of Angel is so much better than any bog standard London area. It really feels like you are in a posh part of London and yet you are nowhere near Chelsea! The area is clean, seems friendly, and plays host to some really adorable housing which makes you feel like you are in some kind of upper-class movie location. I was seriously astounded by the area as there is nowhere nicer they could have placed the Uni.
Accommodation: As with the rest of my London trip I was impressed with the accommodation for my (hopefully) future uni. Located a mere 10 minutes from the university the accommodation was in perfect walking distance so even in the winter it won’t be as much of a ball-ache to get up and go in for your lectures.
The building is nice from the outside and even better inside. You have your own room, which is fully equipped with a massive desk going along one wall, a single bed, desk chair, lamp, and you can choose from an En suite or shared bathroom. You share a kitchen with up to 10 other people who you share your hall with, but each kitchen is huge so seriously I doubt there will be any issues on who’s coco pops are taking up the most room in the cupboard. Adding to all this there is a common room on each floor with various pool and ping pong tables, as well as a TV area with couches, chairs, the whole shebang.
Finally there is a launderette in the basement also with a ping pong table and sofas which I hear through the grapevine plays host to some pretty incredible beer pong tournaments.
If you were worried about going to a London Uni and the accommodation being dire you don’t have to with this one.
The Actual Uni: Well what can I say other than it is amazing. I was looking around the journalism department is particular as that is what I hope to go into and it completely astounded me. They recently spent half a million pounds completely redoing the journalism department and now it is fully equipped with a radio station, TV studio, and a room filled with macs as far as the eye can see. It is nothing other than amazing (especially when you are excited to experience all of these things like radio) to go into a uni and see a fully functioning TV and Radio station! I could not fault any of the facilities what so ever.
As for the teachers they seem fully qualified to me! Each one has more than enough journalism experience to teach an amazing course, and with their connections internships will be nothing less than an amazing experience.
It’s safe to say I fell in love while looking at City University with both the Uni and the city. I would seriously go and see it if you are considering a London/city based Uni because I doubt you will find one better.
