You can definitely Father my Sons

Waking up this morning with neck ache and a sore throat was definitely not fun, but being in a box with Fatherson definitely was!!!

Last night I ventured out to Birmingham’s Rainbow Bar to see a band that is

sure to make their mark this year on the music industry. I have to admit that when I first turned up at the bar I was slightly scared; it was literally four concrete walls and a fire exit. But despite these pre-judgements it turned out to be the perfect place for me to see the band whose music has gotten me through many a rough day.

So, I guess I should start with the supporting acts, Only Shadows and Boy Jumps Ship. They were both very fitting to the Fatherson aesthetic and were perfect beginners for the main event. Only Shadows were up first (always a hard task) and I thought performed exceptionally well considering there was all of about 30 people in the room. Regardless of numbers they really put everything into their performance and most definitely created the indie rock vibe needed for a Fatherson concert. Boy Jumps Ship only added to this vibe, and really got the crowd involved (violent mosh pits needed or nah?). They had the same vibe going as Only Shadows, but were slightly more experienced in their craft I would say. All in though the lads of Fatherson picked some pretty good opening acts- probably a strong 8/10 for that.

But, what about the main event? UNREAL!!! Despite the freezing weather and tiny venue, Fatherson were probably the most grateful act I have ever seen live and it made me love them that much more. It was the first gig they’d ever done in Birmingham and I generally don’t think they were expecting much, but much they most certainly got. The whole crowd was alive with adoration for the band and as they played hit after hit off their debut album ‘I Am an Island’ the crowd were only growing more energetic- something the band definitely fed off. My personal highlights included ‘I like not knowing’, ‘hometown’, and the best moment of the night ‘foreign waters’.

If the extraordinary music wasn’t enough though Ross Leighton’s swearing was definitely worth it. Lord knows I love a swearer, as well as a beard, so combine the two and I’m basically in my happy place. In all fairness he was just ‘fucking excited’ to be there; but weren’t we all?

I just love seeing bands that are real- no shitty auto tune, no synthetics, just guitars, drums, and singing, plain and simple. I can’t possibly hype them up enough because they deserve every success they get.

Definitely in my top 10 best bands to see live and they have only just begun their climb to success. I feel incredibly honoured to be able to say that I was one of the lucky ones to have seen them live, at a tiny venue, where they were so incredibly mesmerising, and if the song they played from their new album (out in June) was anything to go by it’s going to be just as amazing as the first.

I cannot possibly tell you how much I adore this band and how incredible my night was. Intimate, personal, and fucking incredible
