You better work

No student wants to work. They don’t even want to do their uni work let alone work a part-time job. But sometimes, when the student loan is weeks too far away, and you’re already living off toast and curry, you have to do what you have to do to survive. So here are some handy tips on how to get a student job.

Apply for EVERYTHING: I’m not even joking when I say this. Apply for every type of job you can possibly imagine, including all of those you wouldn’t even consider going for prior to your debt. Sometimes the best jobs are those that are unexpected.
Don’t settle: So maybe this is a contradiction to my previous point of applying for everything but hear me out. Although you should definitely be going for every opportunity thrown your way, don’t settle for the first thing that comes around. If you go to an interview and think the place looks dodgy don’t accept the job offer. You need to make sure that you feel comfortable no matter how much money you are in desperate need of.
The two week goal: So this is something that I have learnt with my past jobs. If at first it seems like your job just isn’t right for you stick it out for at least two weeks. There could be a manner of factors that make you feel uncomfortable at work- colleagues, the job role, the amount of hours your working, or maybe you’re right and the job just isn’t for you. Regardless of this you should always aim for the two week goal so you can really asses your role and whether it’s for you or not.
Money is the key: I know it’s probably wrong to say but we’re all thinking it: the only reason you’re getting a part time job is for the money. You don’t care about ‘growing the companies’ sales’, or ‘giving the best customer advice’, all you really want is that dolla in the bank at the end of the month. This is why you need to remember to plough through those hard days with fussy customers and annoying management, because there is a shiny golden payslip at the end of that horrendously dark tunnel to guide you through.
It’s okay to quit: If you really hate your part time job don’t worry. Just quit. Sometimes you get so obsessed with the fact that you have a regular flow of money coming into your bank that you forget that your part-time job is not your career. It’s great to work lots of hours and get that money in between semesters, but if work is getting in the way of uni you need to prioritise, and sometimes quitting is the best way to go.
So there are just 5 little tips on part-time jobs for uni students. If you have a part-time job comment below what you’re doing and how you’re finding it. Alternatively if you don’t have a part time job and want one leave a comment as to whether you found my advice helpful or not.
